Squiggle

What's this Squiggle?

    How to play

Every Squiggle is a line from a real chart, from somewhere in the world. It shows how one thing changed over the years in one place: how much coffee a country drinks, say, or how many of its children finish school. Work out what it is. You have 8 options and 4 guesses.

You start with just the line. Each wrong guess adds a clue:

    1. Just a Squiggle: the line on its own.
    2. Where's the Squiggle from? The place.
    3. Squiggle over the years: the years and the numbers.
    4. Squiggle vs the World: the world's line, on the same scale.

Every wrong option can be ruled out by one of the clues, so it's never down to luck.

When you've finished, you'll find out why the line moves the way it does, and what was happening in that country at the time. Every story links to its sources.

There's a new Squiggle every day. Want more? Open Past Squiggles from the menu, or use the arrows at the top to go back through earlier days.

    About Squiggle

Every Squiggle comes from somewhere in the world, and every one has a story behind it. A country takes up coffee. A new law changes how people work. Prices crash, then recover. You can see it all in the shape of the line, if you know where to look.

Squiggle finds those lines in countries all over the world, about how people eat, work, travel, learn and live, and turns one into a puzzle each day. Each one is chosen for the story it tells, and every story is checked against its sources.

Squiggle was made out of a love for data and the stories inside it.

Every Squiggle is real data. It comes from Our World in Data, the World Bank, Gapminder or the UN's FAO, which gather data from organizations such as the UN and the ILO. Each Squiggle names its original source.

    Privacy

Your games stay on your device. Your guesses, stats and streak are saved in this browser only. Clearing your browser data removes them.

What we count. To learn which Squiggles people enjoy and which are too hard, we count anonymous game events: opening a Squiggle, each guess, finishing and sharing. They are linked to a random code made in your browser, never to your name or email. We also see roughly which country you're playing from, and whether you're on a phone or a computer.
